It takes quite a while for Android updates to be installed. That should change in the future, because Google is working on a shorter processing time. Updates can be installed much more quickly and the mobile phone is available again more quickly.

Android updates: Installation time should decrease noticeably

Google has not yet officially commented on the subject, but changes to the Android Open Source Project (ASOP) show that the processing time for Android updates should be reduced. In plain language, for Android phone owners, this means that Updates installed faster will. The smartphone is then available again sooner.

At the moment it still looks like Android updates can take quite a long time. Even when the actual installation is complete, the cell phones still allow themselves a lot of time to finish processing the update. This is exactly where Google seems to want to start (source: Mishaal Rahman on Twitter).

Among other things, one should stronger compression of the required files lead to time savings. With an update that has a size of 2.3 GB and is installed on a Pixel 6 Pro, the time required is reduced from 23 to 17 minutes initially. Further planned optimizations could then reduce the installation time to 13 minutes. The result would be more than 40 percent time savings.

Google recently introduced Android 13. You can see what has changed here in the video:

When will faster Android updates be available?

It is not yet clear when the installation optimizations will officially become part of Android. The corresponding code has just appeared in the ASOP and has not yet gone through the review phase. So it could still be some time before the noticeably faster Android updates show up in practice.
