Fairphone expands phone sales outside Europe

The sustainable smartphone maker Fairphone is expanding outside Europe for the first time. The company will also sell phones in Asia. To be precise: Taiwan. For the time being, this is the only country outside our continent where the Dutch telephone company will sell its devices.

Fairphone to Taiwan

Taiwan is a logical step for Fairphone, because it has been working with people from Taiwan for years, because that’s where the smartphones are developed. There has also been an office of the company for some time, so expanding there is a fairly obvious choice. There are 23 million people in Taiwan, so that seems like a big potential group of users, but it’s a huge iPhone-minded country. Apple has half of the market share, while Samsung is second with a market share of 24 percent, followed by Oppo with 8 percent.

However, it also means something else, namely that 17 percent of the market share is in the hands of smaller telephone brands, and Fairphone probably fits in well with that in the first instance. People are also generally more concerned with sustainability, which means that Fairphone may appeal to a whole new market with its concept. Fairphone phones are modular, which makes it easier to replace parts. In addition, the brand also works to ensure that the parts are recycled and made in a fair way.

We reviewed the most recent Fairphone last year. In it we wrote: “All in all, Fairphone has been trying for years to change the culture and our view around the smartphone manufacturing process. For years, a Fairphone has had to sacrifice a lot for design and pure specs. And people are generally willing to adapt, provided they don’t have to sacrifice too much for this. The Fairphone 4 could well be the first Fairphone that could bridge the compromise between a sustainable and honest phone compared to slightly less high-end specs. After all, the Fairphone 4 is the first Fairphone that is not years behind in terms of design and specifications and offers a pleasant user experience.”

We are curious how the people in Taiwan will see Fairphone and which brands might be influenced by this Dutch manufacturer.
