Factory reset Chromebook
If your Chromebook stops working properly or you want to sell the device, you can reset it. GIGA explains how the reset works and what you should consider.
The process resets the Chromebook to factory defaults. Note that all personal data and settings will be deleted. You should therefore first create a backup before you start the deletion action.
Perform hard reset
If something doesn’t work properly on the hardware and, for example, the touchpad freezes, you can first perform a hard reset on the Chromebook. Note that data may also be deleted in this way. Proceed as follows:
- switches the Chromebook off.
- Hold those Hold down the refresh button for a few seconds. It’s the circle icon with the arrow.
- Then press “On off‘ while holding the refresh button.
- Once the Chromebook restarts, you release the button.
Reset Chromebook by keyboard shortcut & setting
If you have created a backup, you can reset the Chromebook like this:
- Sign out of the Chromebook.
- Press the keys [Strg] + [Alt] + [Shift] + [R] simultaneously.
- Choose the option “Start anew“.
- In the new menu select “powerwash” and confirmed with “Continue“.
- You will now through the reset process guided.
- Sign in with a Google account. The account that is logged in right after the reset process is also the new one owner account for this Chromebook.

You can also factory reset the Chromebook from Settings:
- To do this, open the ideas.
- calls the “Advanced settings” on.
- Scroll down. Here you can find the one mentioned above “Powerwash” option.
- Confirm your entry and select “Start anew“.
- Again, you will now be guided through the reset process.
A reset is not only necessary for hardware and software problems. Resetting the device also helps if you can no longer log in or have other problems with your user account. You also need to reset it to factory settings if you want to change ownership.
