Face ID under the screen expected for the iPhone 16
Face ID under the screen should arrive, but it will obviously have to wait for the iPhone 16 of 2024. This is what Ross Young, analyst specializing in screens, recently announced. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst well informed about Apple, confirms the information of his colleague.
Face ID under the screen for the iPhone 16
In a tweetKuo says that the iPhone 16 should accommodate Face ID under the screen. “This timeline is less of a technical issue and more of a marketing issue”, he adds. The analyst thus suggests that the technology is ready or about to be, but that does not push Apple to use it immediately.
Since the iPhone X in 2017, Apple’s smartphones have had a notch with the necessary sensors for Face ID. The situation should change in 2022 with the iPhone 14 Pro. These models would no longer have the notch as we have known it for five years, but a hole and a pill on the upper part of the screen. Non-Pro iPhone 14s, on the other hand, would retain the notch. In 2023, all iPhone 15s would be entitled to the hole + pill combo. And so now (all?) iPhone 16s in 2024 would benefit from Face ID under the screen, suggesting that the hole and the pill will disappear.
One thing seems certain: Apple is betting a lot on Face ID and less on Touch ID. The company prefers to focus on facial recognition. Touch ID still exists on some iPads at the Home button and on the iPhone SE. We can also mention its presence on the MacBook Pro and on the Magic Keyboard.
