Netflix games: surprisingly well organized
We know Netflix mainly from series such as Stranger Things, The Crown and Bridgerton, but it doesn’t stop there. The company also focuses on smartphone games. That started at the end of last year, but then there was little to get excited about. Some already existing Stranger Things games suddenly became exclusive to Netflix subscribers. In addition, some simple games were added, such as Shooting Hoops and Card Blast.

Netflix held the Netflix Geeked event last week, full of announcements around geeky series, movies and also games. Then it turned out that more popular series from Netflix are getting a game, including The Queen’s Gambit, La Casa de Papel, Shadow and Bone and Too Hot to Handle.

More interesting games to come
A new game from the makers of Monument Valley will be released later this year, exclusively for Netflix on smartphones. In the game Desta: The Memories Between, the player follows a character who learns more about her past by throwing balls as if it were dodgeball.
From the creators of Alto’s Adventure and Alto’s Odyssey, Lucky Luna is a game based on Japanese folklore. The game is a 2d platformer but you don’t get a jump button. Instead, in each level, the creators offer a new way to help main character Luna navigate mysterious temples and learn more about her past.
Reigns: Three Kingdoms is also due out this year. This is already the fifth part in this fun series in which you make choices by swiping cards left or right. Kind of like Tinder, but instead of arranging a date, you try to keep an entire kingdom afloat in these games.
What you can also look forward to is Spiritfarer, a game that has already scored very high on game consoles and is now coming to smartphones via Netflix. In the game, you follow Stella, who befriends animal creatures in the afterlife and helps them take the next step. A surprisingly emotional game.
Netflix Games is like Apple Arcade
Netflix Games is quite similar to Apple Arcade. Both services offer games via a subscription, which then contains no advertisements and no in-app purchases. You just play the game. A big difference is that with Apple Arcade you only pay for the games. If the new offer is disappointing, you still have your monthly amount. At Netflix, the games are added to a subscription that you probably already have.
Don’t have a Netflix subscription and don’t care much about the series and movies? Then the games are not yet a reason to take out this relatively expensive subscription. The company does promise to have more than fifty games by the end of the year, so that may change. In any case, our interest has been aroused.
