‘Every day I make an excuse to be alone’

Ann Dominique Wilten (32), wife of Danny Froger (35), is mother to Fallon (3) and Scottie (5 months). She has no shortage of secrets and secret desires. “I lie to my daughter at least once a day.”

“Danny and I are both open, especially with friends. We tell a lot, although of course there are always things that not everyone needs to know. We have not made any agreements about what we tell others or what we do and do not share with the outside world. Most of the time we sense what we would rather not make known to the world. Sometimes we look at each other for approval: are we going to share this? That goes without saying.

“If I want Danny to shut up, I’ll kick him under the table”

Sometimes Danny is a bit looser than I am. He doesn’t drink much anymore, but when he has had a drink, he talks a little easier. If I want him to shut up at a time like this, I’ll kick him under the table. Then he immediately knows what time it is, haha.”

Gossip press

“At one point there was news in the press that my mother wouldn’t like a Froger as a son-in-law. But the thing was that I was texting her and she meant: ‘Not a celebrity after all, huh?’ It was said: ‘Mother-in-law not happy with a Froger.’ While everyone in the family has a good relationship with each other.

I was shocked at how quickly things are taken out of context. Then I read something and I think: ‘I didn’t say that at all.’ Six years later, I still have to get used to it. I’ve become more careful about what I say. By nature I am a flapper, an open book, but sometimes I think: I have to be careful, otherwise I will have done it later.”

Me time

“My beauty secret is: pack your agenda and schedule time for yourself. It is tempting to take care of your children first and then yourself. I was warned about this by friends and I notice that I also have a tendency to put myself last. Now I try to make sure I take enough time for myself. Sometimes I say to Danny: ‘You go have fun with the girls, I’ll go to the beautician and the hairdresser.’ I consciously make time for that.”

All excuses

“I lie to Fallon every day at least once. When she asks, “What are you going to do?” she always wants to go. She wants to do everything with me. Unless I say I have to work. So if I want to be alone for a while I say I have to work. Then I come home with groceries and she says: ‘Mama! We’d go shopping together!’ Every day I come up with an excuse to do something on my own.”

Stopped smoking

“I smoked from the age of sixteen, having a nice drink on the weekends. One pack lasted me a week. I haven’t touched a cigarette since I got Fallon. Sometimes I think, how nice it smells, but I can’t think of giving Scottie a hug while I smell like smoke. I like my baby’s Zwitsal scent way too much for that.

I didn’t expect it, but I don’t miss smoking. The secret to sticking with it: make it easier to kick the habit. Put the money you save in a piggy bank and do something fun with it. That helped me enormously. What I found most difficult were the times when smokers go out during dinner parties. Those are always fun times. But then I thought about my baby and it was over in no time.”
