Instagram is experimenting with new ways to monetize. The first users report that advertising can now also appear in their own profile. At the moment, however, the advertising can still be deactivated. The innovation should be welcome for creators, but not for everyone else.

Instagram is testing profile ads

Meta as the operator of Instagram has discovered user profiles as a new opportunity for monetization. Some users report seeing a new toggle in the app’s options. With this you can Ads on your own Instagram profile enable or disable (source: Alessandro Paluzzi on Twitter). This could replace the in-stream ads introduced at the beginning of 2022.

It is currently still unclear whether and when Instagram will release the ads in its own profile for all users. So far the Ads only in some creator accounts popped up, some of whom I’m sure aren’t too averse to the opportunity to profit from the promotion. Other users, on the other hand, are more likely to be annoyed if they now also see ads in profiles.

It wasn’t until April 2022 that Meta Overlay Ads for Reels introduced at Instagram in order to be able to benefit better from the rapidly growing market for short videos. Here, too, the content creators earn money. A year earlier, ads were introduced in the shop section of the app, as well as general ads on Reels. Short videos now account for around 20 percent of Instagram usage time.

Instagram with “Notes” experiment

Instagram continues to experiment with new features outside of the ad market. A “Notes” box now appears in the inbox of some users strongly reminiscent of Twitter. These are short messages with a maximum length of 60 characters. They are visible to everyone who is connected to Instagram. Previously, Instagram was already testing a paywall for some exclusive content – another way to earn more money with the app.
