E-Auto Sion before the end: “We failed!”
The Munich-based company Sono Motors is considering ending series production of its electric car, the Sion. However, a final decision has not yet been made. With a rescue operation, the electric car could still go into series production.
Things are not looking good for Sion, Sono Motors’ electric car. As the company announced on Thursday, the production of the electric car is on the brink. The reason for this is a lack of capital, write the co-founders Jona Christians and Laurin Hahn in a press release.
With the current situation on the financial market, the company is currently having difficulties in raising the necessary funds for production, the letter says: “Collecting the required money is taking much longer than expected. We didn’t manage to explain to the investors why the Sion has the potential to become the world’s first affordable solar electric car.” But there should still be one last rescue attempt.
#saveSion: Community can still save e-car
However, before Sono Motors finally pulls the plug for the Sion, the company would like to give its community the opportunity to secure the production of the electric car after all. in one LinkedIn post wrote Sono Motors:
We failed. This could be the end of Sion. You decide.
Sono Motors is launching a rescue campaign under the hashtag #saveSion. The goal: In the next 50 days, the company wants to get 3,500 Sion reservations together. This would secure the financing of the e-car.
The reservers would not have to pay anything at first. The upfront amount would only be due in the event of a successful campaign. as Attraction Sono Motors offers a discount of up to 3,000 euros on the final price and a fixed number for the waiting list.
E-Auto Sion has a lot of fans, is that enough?
If this campaign fails, it is already clear: That would be the end for the Sion e-car. Sono Motors will then finally exit electric car production and focus on its B2B solar business. Sono Motors has recently been able to convince companies such as Bosch, Mercedes-Benz and Chereau Trucks with its solar technology.
Above all, it is this solar business that is driving growth at Sono Motors. According to the latest quarterly figures, the company was able to increase its sales sixfold compared to the second quarter of 2022. That’s why Jona Christians and Laurin Hahn emphasize: It’s not about the future of Sono Motors, but about the future of the Sion.
When Sono Motors presented the Sion prototype for the first time around five years ago, the concept for the electric car “made in Germany” received a lot of enthusiasm. Innovative ideas such as the solar cell body or charging sharing quickly brought the Sion many fans.
But there were always difficulties with the last step to series production. Last failed here the cooperation with the Swedish e-car manufacturer National Electric Vehicle. Sono Motors is now hoping that the Sion fans can still save the electric car.
