Dyson Supersonic HD07 review
Dyson Supersonic – design and functionality
We have the Dyson Supersonic in the midnight blue copper edition, the packaging of which is packed with accessories, so that you can tell at first glance that it is a real complete package that covers all possible uses.
To make it easier for us, we’ll go through each accessory and then come to the technical highlight, i.e. the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer itself. We start with the additional bonus accessories.
On the one hand, this includes the bag of the Dyson Supersonic. This storage box comes in the color midnight blue and is made of faux leather. It is very robust on the outside and softly padded on the inside, where the smoothing nozzle or styling nozzle fits in, for example, in addition to the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer itself. So a total of 2-3 of the smaller accessories, but no more. It is secured by a strong magnetic closure and should not be able to open by itself. I like it very much, although it would of course have been nice if all the accessories would fit in. I’m really just missing a handle here.
As another accessory, independent of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, we have a detangling comb. This comes with wide, polished teeth and allows it to glide easily through wet or dry hair with minimal friction. As the name suggests, the hair is untangled and the preparatory work for drying is done.
The paddle brush, or the Dyson Paddle Brush, not only looks high-quality, it really is. The midnight blue handle appears to be made of metal and feels very good and the spring-loaded and rounded bristles glide easily through any hair and are also kind to the scalp.
In general, I like the fact that both the detangling comb and the paddle brush in the Dyson Supersonic package are self-developed products that are well thought out for users and at the same time are of high quality. This is not always a matter of course.
The nice thing about the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer accessories is that all the attachments are magnetic and can be easily attached and detached from the front. It is extremely practical because it not only saves time, but also significantly reduces the risk of an attachment or even the hair dryer itself breaking through threads or the like or failing over time through use. In addition, all attachments are made of plastic, but are of very high quality and robust and of course heat-resistant.
First, here we have the diffuser. This distributes the air evenly over a large area to mimic the effect of an accelerated natural drying process. It is also used specifically for curly hair or waves to define them better. Another benefit is that it prevents frizz. Everything works very well here.
The attachment for gentle air flow is also gentle. The name pretty much says it all. This allows you to blow-dry your hair more gently with the Dyson Supersonic, which is particularly useful for fine hair or a sensitive scalp. This gentler air flow has a lower temperature, but still does not dry more slowly in the mentioned application.
Everyone should be familiar with the styling nozzle. Here, the Dyson Supersonic focuses a powerful airflow at a higher temperature and allows individual strands and areas to be styled precisely within a very short time. Can also be combined very well with the brush, for example.
The next two attachments to the Dyson Supersonic are more Dyson exclusive. There are now copies of , but most people who don’t know the Dyson Supersonic in particular shouldn’t be familiar with it. That makes them all the more interesting, especially the last essay. But first we come to the comb attachment with wide teeth. This is suitable for curly or very curly hair, as it lengthens the hair when drying due to the comb attachment or distributes more shape and volume.
The fly tamer attachment (that’s the official name) is ideal for straight hair. It’s brilliant because it allows the Dyson Supersonic to straighten hair with just air and without a straightening iron. Of course, a straightener is more effective in the long term, but when you use the combo of a straightener and this attachment, the attachment does exactly what its official name and want to say: it hides “flyaway” hairs under longer hair for a smoother and shinier result.
Dyson Supersonic – Technical Features
The Dyson Supersonic itself is mostly made of plastic, but is built to a very high standard. It feels noticeably better than the previously tested Tineco Moda One and is technically very interesting despite the lack of smart features. Technically, the Dyson Supersonic works in a similar way to Dyson’s really powerful air purifiers, which is why we also have a hole here with no obvious rotor visible. The air is sucked in here at the back and runs through the Dyson Digital Motor V9 with up to 110,000 revolutions per minute. This has an output of 1600 watts and its air flow reaches 41 l/s. The so-called Air Multiplier technology ensures that a strong and focused air flow is created, which is why it is as effective as said air purifiers.
The air sucked in is analyzed by the internal chipset more than 40 times per second. Here, the Dyson Supersonic only looks at the air temperature and regulates the heat accordingly, relative to the ambient temperature, to avoid heat damage and not to let the hair become dull. The Tineco Moda One, which may be weaker in other areas, was able to score again here with the fact that it is analyzed up to 50 times per second and the hair and ambient moisture is also included in the calculations. That shouldn’t make much of a difference, but it’s still interesting to mention.
In addition to the magnet and air vents on the front, the Dyson Supersonic comes with multiple buttons on the back. On the head we have the button for adjusting the airflow on the left. Here you can choose between high, medium and low. To the right of that we have the temperature controls. The choices are hist 100°C, 80°C, 60°C and 28°C. The latter cold stage is set on the handle, where the on/off switch is also located.
The current status is displayed here using several small LEDs next to the buttons. The more lights up, the higher the airflow or temperature.
Below you will find the HEPA filter of the Dyson Supersonic. I can’t say how effective this is due to the lack of data, but in general it’s similar to filtering particles, pollen and more like an air filter. So certainly as usual more than 99% of air impurities.
We operated the Dyson Supersonic by cable. The power supply is firmly attached to the hair dryer, but at 2.7 meters long enough that you have enough leeway when blow-drying.
Dyson Supersonic price and availability
The Dyson Supersonic is already available and costs 399 euros. It is available in several colors, with the tested midnight blue and copper variant being a kind of special edition. I think it’s also the fanciest version of all and comes with more accessories. I find the price justified. As usual with Dyson products, you don’t just get the name sold here, but a high level of quality. Not only with the main product, but with all the accessories. As someone who comes from the engineering field myself and can assess the technical qualities well, I would also go to the market with a similar price in view of the quality.
It’s not like there aren’t other good alternatives, though. The Tineco Moda One, for example, is a good alternative that comes closest to the Dyson Supersonic. However, if you have the money for it, I would rather go for the Dyson Supersonic in the long term because of the quality and the accessories. Here you have to know for yourself what you need and what you don’t.
