“During our wedding, the official was standing in front of us with the wrong marriage certificate”
Life is expensive enough as it is, so it’s understandable that these couples weren’t quite waiting for it: a wedding that is quite expensive.
Nanda (32): “Our wedding was quite expensive, so my husband and I looked for ways to keep the budget within limits. I was heavily pregnant with our first daughter, there were still many costs to come. Friends of my parents offered a solution: they had their own restaurant and were willing to take care of the entire catering. Against costprice. A great offer, so we gratefully accepted it. ‘Just French cuisine, nothing complicated,’ we hinted.
Thanks for the effort
On the big day, a catering van drove up with a variety of exotic dishes. Indian. Thai. A touch of Indonesian. Not exactly what we had in mind, but worse: it was inedible. The fish looked like rubber, the meat was tough, the sauces bland, and the rice overcooked. Luckily there were gallons of wine to wash it down. Besides: wasn’t it about the gesture? We sent the chefs a huge bouquet afterwards to say thank you. And that our daughter, now two, loves Thai food is probably no coincidence.”

There was once…
Janneke (34): “Almost every night before bed, my husband and I have to tell the same story to our seven and five-year-old sons. “Since you got married, Mom.” Well, it went like this: it didn’t happen. At least, not at the agreed time.
In front of a packed wedding hall, the civil registrar had the wrong marriage certificate in front of him. Ours? Gone. The unease grew as she sprinted out of the room and urged us to remain calm. Another official asked us to wait for a while. That took almost 45 minutes, during which she raced home to get the right documents.
“Ours? Gone”
We still said ‘yes’ that day, but we did file a claim. We had to skip the reception because dinner was about to start when we finally had a ring on our fingers.”
