Doomsday Clock is approaching the hour of our self-destruct!

Panic! With all the misery going on now, the Doomsday Clock is approaching midnight. And that’s not good news.

Well, it hasn’t been the easiest years lately. Unfortunately, it could get worse. The Doomsday Clock strikes 100 seconds to midnight, the hour of humanity’s self-destruction. The new time was set on Thursday by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a nonprofit organization that focuses on global security issues. The Doomsday Clock is an iconic symbol of humanity’s fragility.

Although the time has not been adjusted, the prognosis does not remain too positive. It can even be called gloomy. “Failing to adapt is not good news: in fact, it reflects the board’s judgment that we are stuck at a perilous moment,” said Sharon Squassoni, research professor at the Bulletin. So no improvement has been seen in recent years. There are several reasons for this. The nonprofit warned that arms races, the climate crisis and COVID-19 mean we have no time to lose.

The clock has been ticking towards a catastrophe since 1947, when nuclear weapons were the greatest threat to civilization. That has decreased somewhat now, but other threats have taken its place. The Bulletin launched the project to warn the public how close we are to destroying the world with all kinds of dangerous technology.

Most Dangerous Moment

The safest moment was when the Cold War ended in 1991. When the US and the Soviet Union agreed to exhaust their two strategic nuclear weapons arsenals, the clock was set at 11:43 PM. The closest to midnight was 100 seconds, a time set two years ago that we’re still stuck with today. This makes a statement that we really need to take action. We must make radical changes before it is too late.
