The new A15 Bionic chip
The Apple TV 4K 2022 is equipped with the A15 Bionic chip, which we already know from the iPhone 13. According to Apple, this new chip is 50 percent faster than its predecessor and should easily handle heavy and graphic games. The website FlatplanelsHD put the test to the test and put the third generation Apple TV 4K next to the Xbox One and the Playstation 4.
Apple TV 4K 2022: faster than game consoles
To start with the good news right away: the A15 Bionic chip is much faster than the older consoles such as the Xbox One and the Playstation 4. Another big change in the new Apple TV 4K is the disappearance of the fan. That makes him quiet as a mouse.
According to FlatpanelsHD, this is not at the expense of speed. When a console or PC gets too hot, the processor speed is usually reduced to prevent overheating. This makes a game slower or you get faltering images. The new Apple TV is not affected by this and always remains super fast in games. This makes it even a bit better than its predecessor.
In terms of speed, the Apple TV 4K 2022 is a good game console. The CPU speed is higher than that of the Xbox One and the Playstation 4, but there are more aspects that determine the speed of a game console.
Playstation 4 and Xbox One: more storage capacity
The A15 chip is therefore much faster, but in terms of computing power, the third-generation Apple TV still lags behind the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One. The Apple TV 4K 2022 also loses out to the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One in terms of working memory: the Apple TV has 4GB RAM compared to the 8GB RAM of the other game consoles.
The limited storage is also a disadvantage of the Apple TV 4K: a storage capacity of 64GB is on the low side if you install larger games. The expansion to 128GB was therefore a welcome change for gamers. In comparison, both the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One have a minimum of 500GB of storage space. If you want to use your Apple TV to play games, the version with 128GB is definitely recommended.
Range of games on the Apple TV 4K
In principle, we are approaching the time when games from the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 can technically be played on the Apple TV 4K. The problem is now not so much the technical capacity of the third generation Apple TV 4K, but the lack of games from major developers.
At the moment, Apple Arcade lacks big names, so it’s not worth using the Apple TV as your only game console. If this offer is expanded, it is a completely different story. In that case, the Apple TV 4K third generation can be regarded as a full-fledged game console.
Apple TV 4K 2022: two models
Apple is releasing the new Apple TV for the first time in two different models. The first model has 64GB of storage space and costs 169 euros. If you put twenty euros more on the table, you have an Apple TV 4K 2022 with Ethernet connection and more storage space (128GB). This makes it a lot cheaper than its predecessor.
