Do you have an iPhone 6 Plus? He is now officially ‘vintage’

You don’t have to call the iPhone 6 Plus antique yet. But let’s be honest: the smartphone from 2014 is now a bit vintage. Apple now thinks so too.

Read on after the ad.

iPhone 6 Plus: a vintage product

Apple maintains a list of vintage products on its website. Products that Apple stopped selling more than five years and less than seven years ago have been labeled “vintage” by the tech giant.

The iPhone 6 Plus first appeared in September 2014, along with the smaller iPhone 6. Sales stopped in September 2016, after the launch of the iPhone 7 (Plus). That was more than five years ago and that is why the iPhone 6 Plus joins the list of vintage products.

These iPhones are even more on the vintage list:

  • iPhone 4 8GB (from 2010)
  • iPhone 4s 8GB (from 2011)
  • iPhone 5 (from 2012)
  • iPhone 5c (from 2012)

The smaller iPhone 6 is still missing because the device was on sale longer. Apple sold the smartphone until September 2018, so it will be another two years before it is classified as a vintage product.

Vintage vs Aged

The fact that Apple labels some products as ‘vintage’ is not just for fun. The company supplies spare parts for up to five years after the last sale – this is also mandatory in some countries. This means that Apple (or authorized service providers) basically no longer repair vintage products – including the iPhone 6 Plus.

We say ‘in principle’ because there are exceptions. They don’t exist for products that Apple stopped selling seven years ago or more. Apple labels these products as ‘obsolete’. This includes some iPhone 4 models (with 16 or 32 GB) and all older iPhone models.
