The growth of TikTok

TikTok is an app from the Chinese company ByteDance, and it was launched back in 2016 with the name Douyin. In one year, the app had 100 million users and a year later an international variant, called TikTok, came out.

By now, almost everyone knows this video app, and recently it managed to become the first non-Facebook app to reach the mark of 3 billion users worldwide. TikTok is therefore regularly at the top of lists of the most downloaded apps of the moment.

However, TikTok has a dark side, because there have been concerns with the privacy policy of the Chinese ByteDance from the start. The Consumers’ Association therefore announced on Tuesday that it is taking TikTok to court for violation of children’s rights. The US has tried for a while to bring the app into American hands, but it has not been successful. Many competitors are only too happy to compete with TikTok, but that does not seem to hinder the growth of the platform for the time being.
