AirPods fall out of ear: 5 tips
The editors of iPhoned are very enthusiastic about AirPods. Apple’s earbuds are extremely user-friendly, provide decent sound quality and also look stylish. But, they are not perfect. Apart from the hefty price tag, they also fall out of your ears relatively quickly.
This is evident from our recently published fit test. In this we looked at how well five different types of earplugs stay in place during exercise. The AirPods Pro in particular did not come out well in this test. These earplugs fall out of your ears very quickly, as we have found.
And that is of course quite difficult with completely wireless gadgets. You therefore want to prevent the AirPods from falling out of your ears in the first place and that is what this article is about. There are several ways to make the earplugs more stable. We list 5 methods.
1. AirPods Pro fall out of ear
We’ll start with the low-hanging fruit. Do you wear AirPods Pro and do they fall out of your ears quickly? Then the first solution is simple: place a different size ear cushion.
Apple supplies several attachments as standard and it pays to experiment with them. After all, there is a good chance that a size larger or smaller will fit your ears much better. Tip: use the Fit test for this. With this test you can check exactly which size ear cushions you need.

2. Spin the AirPods, be a trendsetter
Another classic. Most people wear their AirPods in such a way that the stems point to the ground. If they quickly fall out of your ears, you can of course turn the earplugs a bit. For example, rotate the AirPods slightly so that the stems point outwards, rather than at the ground. This may reduce the risk of the AirPods falling out of your ears.
Possibly indeed, because this trick certainly does not work for everyone. You could therefore also try to wear the AirPods ‘inverted’, so with the stems upwards. The ends then clamp against the top of the auricle, possibly keeping them in place. This solution is not ideal, because the sound quality will suffer anyway.
3. Just tap
Did the simple tips not work and the AirPods still fall out of your ears? Then it is time to take more drastic measures, such as applying tape. The idea behind this is that the tape ensures that the earplugs stay in your ear.
It is best to use anti-slip tape or waterproof tape for this. The latter option in particular works well, because this material is naturally very sticky (because it must be able to withstand water).
Applying the tape is not difficult, but you may need to experiment a bit. For example, you can try cutting the waterproof tape with scissors, but it’s much easier to grab a hole punch. You use this to cut out very small circles of the tape.
Then apply these circles above and below the microphone of both earplugs. Now it’s just a matter of pressing and placing the AirPods (Pro) in your ears. If all goes well, they will now stay in place a lot better.
The obvious disadvantage of this method is that the wearing comfort may be reduced.
4. A case for AirPods
Are the AirPods still falling out of your ear? Then it’s time for the heavier artillery. A visually appealing and practical solution is to put your AirPods in a case. These ‘covers’ (also called ear tips or sleeves) are usually made of silicone, which gives them more grip.
In addition, the AirPods cases are very flexible for easy application. Also great: they come in all shapes and sizes, so there is sure to be an option that you like. You usually spend between 5 and 10 euros for such AirPods eartips.

5. Or do you go for brackets?
Admittedly, this solution to AirPods falling out doesn’t look very charming. Fortunately, the tip is extremely effective. You can buy hooks for AirPods (Pro). These accessories clamp around your ear cup and you are therefore almost certain that they will stay in place.
You do have to be sure that the hooks fit around your ear cups, because that is not the case with everyone. You can buy the AirPods hooks at several points of sale for amounts between 10 and 25 euros.
You can also tap ‘outboard’ brackets on the head, by the way. These hang, as the name suggests, around the outside of your ear. The advantage of this is that the AirPods are very firmly in place. However, not everyone will choose this solution, as it looks somewhat unconventional.
