Especially fresh fruit and vegetables, plus a coffee from the barista: Aldi is currently testing a new concept for small branches. There is also no classic checkout here; instead, customers simply scan the goods themselves. Aldi has a young and urban target group in its sights.
Aldi is testing small corner stores in Australia
While Aldi is actually known for low prices and a rather sober design of its branches, in Australia they are now going different ways. There the discounter is currently testing corner stores, which are much smaller than traditional branches. There are no pallets with tons of different products here. Instead it stands especially fresh vegetables and fruit in the centre.
For a lot cozier atmosphere An integrated mini-café is also to serve, where customers can treat themselves to a coffee or freshly squeezed orange juice. For the special look and the bright colors of the small shops in Australia we worked with the design office Landini Associates (source: W&V).
Customers also have to be prepared for an important change in the payment process. Instead of putting the goods on the conveyor belt and getting a sum from the cashier, there is only one in the corner stores Self checkout. So customers have to take action themselves if they want to shop in Aldi’s corner shop.

Aldi’s shop on the corner: further branches planned
So far, Aldi’s first corner store is in Sydney. If the Australian managing director of the company has its way, three more are to be added shortly. They are also special here early opening times, because the small shops open from 7 a.m. It is currently not known whether Aldi would like to implement the concept in other countries.
