In March, Gamescom organizers confidently announced that this year’s event would take place in the presence of developers and players directly at the Cologne Exhibition Center. However, the situation around the coronavirus pandemic eventually forced the organizers to go the purely digital route for the second time and thus give up not only the classic form, but undoubtedly considerable funds for tickets, which hundreds of thousands of players enthusiastically bought in previous years. According to published statistics, however, it was not a loss in the true sense of the word and it turned out that even in the field virtual The fair, whose main focus is on online broadcasts of game presentations, can increase interest and satisfactory results. This year’s Gamescom surpassed the previous one and attracted over 13 million viewers from 180 countries to monitors and televisions. This is a 30 percent increase compared to last year and the published statistics do not end here.

Details are also coming to the Opening Night Live account – the event of the moderator Geoff Keighley, through which the German fair has started since 2019. This year it was watched by 5.8 million spectators, but we must mention that the final issue also includes statistics from many restreams. However, the number of 2 million people watching at the same time is interesting, which is a great result and also a 30 percent increase compared to last year. As for other broadcasts, partial statistics do not come, however, the broadcast of Awesome Indies was watched live by 500,000 people, and even here there is more interest than last year. In addition to the streams, interest in the connected Steam Festival has grown – by 43 percent year-on-year, 15,000 people visited the interactive indie game stand and a fan community raised almost 7,000 euros for the Gamescom Forest Foundation, which seeks to restore a climate-resistant forest near Bayeruth, Germany.

“With our digital concept, we have managed to take a huge step forward, to the delight of many of our partners and the entire community,” say the organizers of the fair in a press release. The Gamescom 2021 is described as a huge success and claims to be a great success digital basis for future years. According to the current statement, the nearest one should take place by default, ie directly at the exhibition center at the usual date at the end of August. The organizers have already defined that the Gamescom 2022 will take place from 24 to 28 August, and one of the organizers, Felix Falk, expressed the belief that everything would finally turn out as planned. However, he did not resist the idea of ​​hybrid action and confirmed that he would like to build on digital foundations in the future. So hopefully it will bring better service for fans who can’t or don’t want to travel to Germany, and that there will be a pleasant combination of needs and possibilities, not an excessive change of concept. Although Gamescom has been very different from the E3 in the past, it is an event designed especially for fans, and as such would perhaps require only more space and better availability of refreshments for greater satisfaction. The appearance of the stands, their number and stratification, corresponds very well to the ideas of the gaming fair, and the information about less than 400,000 visitors in 2019 only underlines this.
