Digital driving license in Apple Wallet: finally also to the Netherlands
The European Union is working on a digital driver’s license, so you can add your driver’s license to your Apple Wallet. Finally! But when will this feature come?

European Union is working on a digital driving licence
The European Union is working on a digital database that will digitize all European driving licenses in the future. The biggest advantage of such a digital driver’s license: you can add the card to your Apple Wallet. From now on you no longer have to physically carry your driver’s license with you, but you can identify yourself with your digital driver’s license.

In the United States this is already possible in certain states, for example in Arizona you can already add a driver’s license to your Apple Wallet. In Europe, a number of countries are already well advanced with the introduction of a digital driving licence.
For example, Poland, Spain, Denmark, Greece and Portugal already have the option for this driving license. The European Union now wants to expand it to all European countries.
Digital driver’s license has advantages and disadvantages
It is of course extremely useful if you can put your driver’s license in Apple Wallet. You then always have a valid proof of identity with you and you no longer have to take your wallet with you, especially if you have enabled Apple Pay. This is of course not the only reason why the European Union is working on introducing the digital driving licence.
By storing all driving licenses in a digital database, traffic violations abroad can be tackled more easily. At present, about 40 percent of all traffic offenses committed by foreigners are not yet punished, but this will change with the European digital driving licence. For example, you will soon get away with a traffic fine in Austria less quickly.
Digital ID card for your Apple Wallet will follow soon
In the meantime, the European Union is also working on digitizing ID cards and passports. As soon as these documents are in the digital database of the European Union, you can probably add them to your Apple Wallet. Your wallet then really becomes superfluous: with your iPhone you have your debit card, driver’s license and passport within reach in Apple Wallet.
It is not yet clear when the function will become available in the Netherlands. In any case, it is certain that the European Union is working on the new position. On 1 March, the European Commission submitted a new proposal for the introduction of the digital driving licence. This proposal has yet to be approved, so the digital driver’s license in your Apple Wallet will probably take a while.
