Deliveries of flexible displays will fall by a third this quarter

Flexible OLED displays are not only part of folding smartphones, but also classic models with curved displays. According to the portal GizmoChina deliveries of flexible or flexible OLED displays will fall by more than a third this quarter, reflecting the small supply of new models during this period.

The flexible display market continues to be dominated by Samsung

The portal is based on a report by the analytical company Omdia, which states that 57 million flexible OLED displays will be delivered in the second quarter. Compared to the previous quarter, this is a decrease of up to 35%. Compared to the same quarter last year, however, this is an increase of up to 54%. The report also says 53 million fixed OLED displays will be delivered this quarter. This is confirmed by the growing trend of flexible displays even among cheap models.

The largest manufacturer is still the South Korean company Samsung Display, which is to supply 39.1 million flexible displays to the market. Compared to the previous quarter, this is a decrease of 42.8%, but a year-on-year increase of up to 61.6%. The second is the LG Display with 10.6 million flexible displays shipped, down 41.1% from the first quarter.

However, year-on-year deliveries to this South Korean company also increased, by as much as 55.9%. In other places, we already have lesser-known manufacturers of flexible displays. The Chinese manufacturer BOE is to supply the market with 7.9 million pieces, CSOT 3.1 million pieces, Visionox 2.1 million pieces and Tianma will supply only 1.4 million flexible OLED displays.

Deliveries should increase with the introduction of new smartphones

The reason for the decrease compared to the previous quarter is mainly that the second quarter is usually a sales season, when fewer smartphones are introduced than in other periods. Samsung and Xiaomi launched their flagships earlier this year, and Huawei should not unveil its Huawei P50 flagship until late June.

Apple already uses flexible OLED displays in its iPhones. It launched them on the market in the autumn and at that time their sales numbers are traditionally lower. Its smartphones are among the best-selling, and therefore the manufacturers of OLED displays also depend on them. Their deliveries will thus increase only with the introduction of new models. As early as August, Samsung should introduce the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 folding smartphones.
