Background to the DC Extended Universe
Marvel fans will probably now protest: “Everything was just stolen and copied from the Marvel Cinematic Universe!” That is partly true, but partly the DC Extended Universe has been planned for a long time and was held up due to various grievances and flops.
A film about the Justice League (org .: Justice League) was planned for 2009, three years before Marvel’s first “Avengers” film. However, this plan was put on hold again by various problems, the writers’ strike and the huge success of “The Dark Knight”. The joint film universe should then start in 2011 with “Green Lantern”. However, since the film about the green lantern bearer did not go down well with the critics and also fell short of expectations at the box office, Warner Bros. broke off the attempt at a film-spanning universe.
Meanwhile, at Marvel, “Iron Man”, “Hulk”, “Thor” and “Captain America” slowly formed a whole, which finally culminated in the successful superhero mash-up “The Avengers”. Inspired by the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Warner Bros. started another attempt to get the DC Cinematic Universe up and running with “Man of Steel” (2013).
While “Man of Steel” still got average ratings, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” were torn apart by many critics. Nonetheless, all three films impressed with box office results above the 600 million US dollar mark.
“Wonder Woman” was largely received positively and unceremoniously held up by many critics as a shining example of what DC can do with its film universe. The subsequent films “Justice League” and “Aquaman” could not maintain this standard and were again rated rather average.
The common film universe is crumbling
For a long time, the mood towards a shared universe at Warner and DC has seemed to be waning. The direction in which the DCEU will develop is still not entirely clear at this point in time. While “Joker” has already got its own dark thriller away from the DCEU and the upcoming restart with “The Batman” will not be part of the larger film universe, reboots like “The Suicide Squad” and Directos Cuts like “Zack Snyder: Justice League” are part of it. to the big picture. In March 2019, Kevin Tsujihara, then CEO of Warner Bros. Entertainment, told the LA Times:
“You can see that the focus is much more on individual experiences around individual characters. That is not to say that we will not go back to a more connected universe at some point. But it feels like this is the right strategy for us at the moment. “
While the stand-alone films should come into focus, there are indications and rumors that certain superheroes are simply getting their own little mini-film universe, like their colleagues from “We Got This Covered” to report. With films like “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods ”are also planned future films that will continue the DCEU. Current relationship status between Warner and the DCEU: “It’s complicated.”
