dark mode finally comes to iPhone

Google Maps is the most popular navigation app – and also the most comprehensive. But what is strikingly missing is a dark mode. Google will finally bring it to the iPhone soon, the search giant announced.

Google Maps: Dark Mode for iPhone

In iOS 13, Apple introduced a dark mode. Most well-known apps support the dark display, but Google Maps did not introduce a ‘dark mode’.

Now, Google announces that it is finally bringing dark mode to Google Maps’ iOS app. This way you can navigate at night with the navigation app, without being blinded by the bright light of your iPhone screen.

You can see what the night-friendly look of Google Maps looks like in the image above. The navigation app mainly has gray tones, which is a lot quieter for your eyes in the evenings. In addition, the dark mode has another advantage, according to Google: the less bright light is beneficial for the battery life of your iPhone.

The dark mode for the iPhone will be “rolled out in the coming weeks,” Google reports. This is for both the iPhone and iPad version. The view should be available to everyone by the end of August. You can read how to activate dark mode on the iPhone in the article about enabling dark mode.

Google Maps widgets

In addition to the dark mode, Google will introduce more interesting features in the coming period. The app will soon support widgets and they come in two variants. One shows the traffic conditions in your area, the other has a search bar with shortcuts underneath. For example, you can quickly navigate to a restaurant near you.

You will also soon be able to share your live location, which is already possible with Apple’s Maps app. This works through the Messages app. By default, you share your location for one hour, but you can extend this to three days.
