D66 wants the price ceiling for childcare as soon as possible because of rising costs

If it is up to government party D66, there will be a price ceiling in childcare from 2025. The party hopes that this will prevent parents from taking their child from childcare, because it will be too expensive.

Due to rising energy prices and staff shortages, the costs of childcare will rise sharply, RTL News reports. The price of childcare often rises faster than the allowance that parents receive. A big problem, says D66 member of parliament Fonda Sahla. As a result, there is a good chance that parents will no longer take their child to daycare because they can no longer afford it. “Child care is extremely important. That is why we believe that there should be a price ceiling so that children can continue to go to the shelter,” says Sahla.

Free childcare in 2027

Because some parents are already struggling to pay for childcare, D66 wants to introduce the price ceiling as soon as possible. Not in 2027, but two years earlier: in 2025. The plan to make childcare free in the Netherlands was recently postponed to 2027. The government expects that more parents will make use of free childcare and wants to give the sector more time to to prepare for this.

Good childcare

Last Tuesday, dozens of organizations, including WOMEN Inc., Youth Care Netherlands and FNV, sounded the alarm: according to them, the childcare system must be overhauled, and as soon as possible. They call on the cabinet to ensure that childcare is ‘free, good, hassle-free and for all children’. Good childcare would contribute to children’s development, equal opportunities, greater participation of women in the labor market and help with labor shortages in other sectors.
