Create Table of Contents in Google Docs
If you have written an essay for school or made a very extensive planning for your three-week trip to Japan, it is useful to give people a little more guidance on what to expect, but also what they can find where. That’s what the table of contents is for. It is – especially if you still make adjustments – sometimes a bit of a hassle to put the pages down properly.
Google makes it easier for you to create a table of contents. It is already much easier than doing everything manually: you can already choose Table of Contents by clicking on Insert in Google Docs. Google then automatically puts all headings together with a page numbering. Very handy, because it saves you going through your entire document to find page numbers, et cetera.

More control over your table of contents
Something that is already so useful, however, can be even better, thinks Google. For example, it will soon add more management options. It doesn’t matter if you have a private account or a certain type of Workspace account, this new capability is coming to everyone who uses Google Docs. They are now being rolled out and may take until early April. So if you are writing a paper now, it may be worthwhile to wait a while before making your table of contents: rather wait until the deadline. That’s a smart thing to do with tables of contents anyway, because then you’re really using the final version of your document and there won’t be all kinds of adjustments that might mess up the table of contents.
