Consumer center advises against wind turbines on the roof

In addition to the installation of solar systems, more and more homeowners are also thinking about a wind turbine on the roof. However, consumer advocates advise against the operation of such systems. The backgrounds.

In the course of the energy transition, many households in Germany are becoming self-sufficient. Because many people installed solar systems on their roofs to avoid rising electricity prices. But another concept is also enjoying increasing popularity: a windmill on the roof.

Finding solutions for your own garden is relatively easy these days. However, there is one thing that many people often do not pay attention to, namely the question of when such an investment is really worthwhile. The consumer center in North Rhine-Westphalia now even advises against setting up a private wind turbine.

Windmill on the roof: Usually doesn’t keep what it promises

According to the consumer organization, there are currently several reasons against a wind turbine on the roof. The main reason is that many investments don’t deliver the promised results over the long term. Because the yield depends heavily on the choice of location. In addition, small systems are mostly not as efficient as their larger siblings.

After all, the market is comparatively small and many providers still see no incentive to improve the efficiency of their systems. In addition, there is the service life of a system. Solar systems achieve a service life of around 20 years, while wind power systems are said to be “significantly shorter”.

Yield of only 33 euros per year?

The consumer center also submits a concrete bill. A wind turbine with a diameter of one meter and a rotor area of over 0.8 square meters generates around 96 kilowatt hours per year on average. This corresponds to around 33 euros. Those who are not put off by the low yields should at least keep a few things in mind.

The wind turbine should stand free and ideally not be surrounded by other structures. An installation on a hill is therefore more worthwhile than in a valley. At the same time, operation on the roof of the house is not recommended. Because noises and vibrations tend to be transferred to other structures.
