The Sonos Ray is the brand’s new and cheapest soundbar. He should make it more accessible to give the sound of your television a big upgrade. It comes with True Play support and can automatically mute the loudest tones at night. The Sonos Ray costs 299 euros.

Sonos Ray soundbar

A new soundbar that enables surround sound and more powerful television sound for a wide group of people, Sonos will be presenting it at a digital launch event on Thursday. The Sonos Ray works with four amplifiers, two tweeters and two mid-woofers. According to Sonos, that setup should provide a rich sound when you watch TV, listen to music or play games on your game console. So it does not come with a separate subwoofer and the mid-woofers only take care of the low tones.

The Ray works with TruePlay, which is a well-known Sonos function that ensures that your sound is optimized for the room in which the soundbar is located. Furthermore, the sound is only directed forwards and comes from a flat grill so that it cannot be distorted by, for example, your TV cabinet. Sonos also takes into account those who go to bed earlier. The Night Sound setting can mute the loudest tones at night so that, for example, no one is suddenly awakened by an explosion that sounds like an action movie.

Connections and surround setup

The Ray can be connected to almost any TV thanks to the optical audio input. This means that the device is not connected via HDMI like the other soundbars from Sonos. It does have an Ethernet port, although you can also connect your Ray soundbar via WiFi.

You can then also play music via your phone if you let the soundbar work with apps such as Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. The Ray also has an infrared receiver, so you can also operate it via a remote control. At the top are touch buttons that let you play and pause or adjust the volume.

Sonos emphasizes that the Ray can also be placed in a surround setup and you can make it work with a subwoofer or speakers on either side of the room via the Sonos app. The Ray should become the cheapest soundbar in Sonos’ portfolio, next to the premium Arc and the midrange Beam (Gen 2).

The Sonos Ray is available in a white and black shade. It will be in stores from June 7 and costs 299 euros.

Sonos also unveiled a smart voice assistant called Sonos Voice Control on Thursday. That function will roll out to all smart speakers of the brand via an update, but it will not work with the Ray. The Sonos Ray also does not work with other smart helpers such as Alexa or the Google Assistant.
