The children in the Netherlands are generally very satisfied with their lives. They give it an average of 7.7, according to research by the Ombudsman for Children.

Online questionnaire

The organization offered an online questionnaire on its website two months ago. Children between the ages of 8 and 18 were approached via social media and youth organizations to complete the survey. 2347 boys and girls did that. Many children give their life more than satisfactory; 13 percent of those surveyed give life a 5 or less.

Children are concerned

There are a few notable things to read in this study. For example, children are concerned about the war in Ukraine and the climate. They also want extra participation and a good approach to poverty. Children are also dissatisfied with the support they receive from adults around them.

Find solution within yourself

Children often say that they think they should improve their own behavior or feeling. The organization Children’s Ombudsman calls this worrying. “They look for the solution to many problems within themselves. We think this is because they have less and less confidence in adults, not their parents, to solve the problems in society,” said a spokeswoman. Adults should take their responsibility in this, the Ombudsman believes. “It is important to look at your own behavior as a parent. Set a good example, for example about how you treat each other and how you solve problems together.”
