‘Child must be able to have the surname of both parents’

Now it is still the case that you can choose the surname of the (duo) mother or father – not both.

Poll

According to the ministry, the bill makes it possible to ‘express the connection with both parents’. “One in three people is positive about the option of giving children the names of both parents,” says Dekker. “We want to give parents that option.” With this, Dekker is referring to a public poll by the Ministry of Justice and Security in 2020. This shows that 32 percent of people think it should be possible for parents to give their children the names of both parents.

And… just combine!

To provide additional clarity, the ministry shows some examples of new names. If you are together called De Vries and Willems, you will soon have four options: you can name your child De Vries or Willems, or De Vries Willems or Willems de Vries. If someone with the combined name, such as Willems de Vries, has children with someone who also has a combined name, even ten surnames are possible for those children. Do you already have a double or multiple surname? Then this name is seen as a single surname.

Before the double name is possible, the law still needs to be approved by parliament.
