Epic Games has demonstrated a new demo of Unreal Engine 5 technology in action and released an early access version of the engine itself. The full version of the development tools was to be available early next year. Or so Epic hopes. But now developers can download the preliminary version and start playing with it.
Even if you’re not interested in the technical details, you might be interested in the aforementioned Valley of the Ancient demo. Echo, the heroine of the first playable demonstration of technology (Lumen in the Land of Nanite), will face a giant with a laser, which he will defeat. This demo version is also available to game authors, who can explore it, play with it and edit it as they please. The technology and its operation are presented in more detail by the representatives of Epic in the new video.
It is worth noting the Temporal Super Resolution technology, which simply puts promising almost 4K quality for the price of 1080p.
The company is attracting new features and techniques, such as Nanite and Lumen, and promises huge advances in graphics that are even closer to the quality of film tricks and assets. The sample project also has approximately 100 GB. So just the Valley of the Ancient demo itself. The tools then another 100 GB. The new generation of engine for PC and the new generation of consoles simply has their price.
And speaking of hardware, the Temporal Super Resolution technology is also worth noting, which simply puts out almost 4K quality for the price of 1080p. The result is simply a sharper image with lower demands, resulting in higher framerate on the same hardware. Such upscaling should work not only on the PC, but also on the PS5 and Xbox Series. The new feature replaces the existing Temporal anti-aliasing.
It’s also worth noting that we were able to watch Unreal Engine 5 on the Xbox Series X for the first time. If you want, you can download the tools yourself, as well as a demo and try everything. It is available on a PC in the Epic Games launcher and you will need an RTX 2080 graphics card for it. The demo is not available on consoles, but according to Epic it works on them without any problems.
And, of course, developers are already “playing” with the new tools. For example, the armored team of InGame Studios is immersed under the surface of Unreal Engine 5.
