Cheche: What does the youth word mean?
You may come across the phrase “cheche” on social media like Instagram or Twitter. What does that mean?
The word appears in German-language contributions. You not only read it in various posts, you can also hear it in videos on YouTube, TikTok & Co.
What is a “cheche”?
“Cheche” is an insult. What exactly is meant by this is unclear. Generally someone is devalued with this expression. It can mean something like “loser” or “Victim“.
At TikTok, the term appears primarily in videos that were shot in the Frankfurt area. It is pronounced with an “h” as in “hotel” followed by an “ä”.
Unlike many net-speak terms, “cheche” does not have its origins in English. Instead, it is said to have appeared for the first time in a German-language TikTok video in December 2021. At that time, a young woman called an interviewer “Cheche”. (“You look and speak like a Cheche“). The person addressed could not explain what was meant by that. Even after the clip, there was no resolution or answer to the question of what “Cheche” means. In the video, the interviewer was described as weird and his pants as cheap.
Cheche: That’s behind it
In Spanish “cheche” means “tearful” or “pampered“. In the Cuban dialect you can also have one with it show off describe.
Even if the exact meaning of “Cheche” remains unclear, the word can be used whenever you want to badmouth something. So it can be used on the one hand to make fun of people and on the other hand to point out that situations or actions are stupid. If something is “cheche”, you don’t feel like it.
