Cars and apps will warn motorists about traffic and emergency services

Different applications and cars from different manufacturers will warn motorists on the Dutch roads in certain cases. This concerns, for example, traffic jams and dangerous traffic situations.

Warning in the car

It has been possible for a long time to receive a notification in Flitsmeister when an ambulance is approaching, for example. These reports are further expanded through a collaboration between six companies and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. These warnings can warn motorists in various situations. Think of unsafe traffic situations such as a wrong-way driver, but also closed lanes, extreme weather conditions, traffic jams, accidents and other matters such as the maximum speed. The motorist also receives a notification when emergency services arrive with sirens and flashing lights. With this report, it must also be shown in which direction and from which side the police, ambulance or fire brigade is coming.

It is a trial of the Safety Priority Services system. The Netherlands is the first country in Europe to warn motorists via apps and the cars themselves. It is part of European legislation and regulations that will come into effect in 2025. Testing is already underway with the companies involved. When a notification is received, no action needs to be taken, so that the distraction must be kept to a minimum.

The companies that are working with for the warnings are Hyundai, Kia, ANWB, Be-Mobile, Inrix and TomTom.
