It’s the 17-year-old Dutch student Quinten Coret who, in addition to his studies, has devoted almost all his time to the game. This has resulted in the analysis and processing of an enormous amount of corona-related data into a game. The game starts at the start of the pandemic, on February 28, 2020. On that day, the first corona infection in the Netherlands was reported. From that day on, it is up to you to implement the right measures, and you can immediately see in a graph what effect those measures have.

Coret starts the game with the following message: “After two years of press conferences, everyone has their own ideas about corona policy. But can we really do better than Hugo de Jonge?” In the game you will therefore be faced with the same choices as De Jonge, who was the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport at the time. You introduce the measures and, if desired, lift them again, in order to see the corona figures change. In addition, you keep an eye on the news to see how your policy is falling in society.

How can you get better than Hugo?

Coret says in an interview with Metronieuws that he has no golden tip for winning Better than Hugo: “Of course you can immediately deploy all measures, but that disrupts society. It is essential to intervene as quickly as possible, then you can limited measures still achieve far fewer deaths than Hugo de Jonge.”
