BMW doesn’t want to go all out

The range is one of the top criteria when buying an electric car. As a rule, the manufacturers try to outdo each other in an attempt to always achieve new maximum values. But BMW is now rejecting the game – at least in one respect.

Range with the electric car: BMW is dropping out of the race

With the “New Class” BMW is planning a big step for electric cars from 2025. For the first time since the ramp-up of e-mobility, the platform will be the basis for electric vehicles from Bavaria, which were developed exclusively as such. So far, BMW has relied on a body that can be used for combustion engines as well as for electric drives.

When the time comes, Bayern want their customers too provide more reach. BMW had recently announced that it was researching new batteries for this purpose. These should enable e-cars to cover a good 1,000 km on one charge.

But you don’t want to push it any further, as Thomas Albrecht, head of the Efficient Dynamics department at BMW, explains: “Gen6 batteries will give us 30 percent more range than our current Gen5, but we will not go over 1,000 km, although we can. We don’t think that such a long range is necessary,” says Albrecht (source: car).

Instead of chasing after new highs like some of the competitors, you are probably satisfied with around 1,000 km in the absolute peak performance. But they should not remain the only advantage of the new battery cells. energy density and Loading speed should be increased the latter by up to 30 percent. In the future, BMW electric cars should be able to charge with up to 270 kW (source: Ecomento).

E-cars from BMW could soon come with another special feature:

Hydrogen as an alternative: BMW is not committed to just one drive

However, this does not yet mean a definitive commitment to the electric drive. BMW remains committed to keeping alternatives open for the future. Together with Toyota they want to advance the development of the hydrogen cell. 2025 is also an important year for BMW with these e-car plans.

It remains exciting to see what Bayern are up to in other segments given the plans for top models. There, for example, the strong charging capacity could compensate for a lower total capacity in rechargeable batteries for cheaper models. Because the Production costs are to be reduced in the future. Whether that is currently realistic is another matter.
