What is a biomutant?
Environmental pollution, industry, radioactive contamination, climate change – humanity has once again destroyed our beautiful planet properly and consequently did not survive the mess it caused itself. Hundreds of years later, the earth is only inhabited by animals, which, however, come with all kinds of genetic mutations due to the long-term effects.
You yourself take control of a kind of raccoon, with which you then the Open world explored. An original idea right at the beginning of the game: The appearance of your protégé depends on your chosen skills. Particularly strong characters have broad shoulders, but the higher your intelligence, the bigger your head.
In the center of the game world is the tree of Life. Its existence is endangered, however, because the four world eaters gnaw at its roots. So it’s your job to defeat the beasts – or to help destroy the tree, because Biomutant leaves the choice up to youwhether her Really save the world want or you instead take the side of evil.
The Eaters of the World are not the only ones who want to damage the tree. There are six tribes in the game worldto ally with. However, not everyone is interested in saving the tree.
In this way Biomutant wants to motivate you to play through several times. A run is relatively manageable with 12 to 15 hours and can be influenced by a number of variables: Which tribe do you join? Will you save the tree of life? Do you defeat all Eaters of the World? Do your actions increase your light or dark aura? And which characters do you secure a place on the life-saving ark?
Test conclusion
Biomutant is doing a lot right on paper, as it meets many of the criteria I wanted in the jungle of the same AAA adventures: One small but dense open world, a original scenario, freedom of choice, Replayability. Still, you can use these features Do not fully develop your potential.
This is mainly due to the very easy level of difficulty. Even on the middle of the three levels of difficulty, I can count on one hand how often I had to do a quick heal throughout the game. Even the boss fights against the world eaters are secured with checkpoints between the respective phases.
Now, a simple level of difficulty is not a bad thing per se, but it does many aspects of the game are superfluous. Neither do I have to search the world for the best equipment, complete quests for unique weapons, or familiarize myself with the complex crafting system, as I can easily defeat the world eater and hostile tribes without all this preparation. If you are looking for a challenge, you must first play through the game and then start New Game +.
Exploring the open world could also be so much better if I was given more responsibility as a player. That’s how it is Position of the four Eaters of the World marked on the map from the beginning. Just like the dungeons in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I could have paved my own way to face the beasts.
Instead, Biomutant sends me permanently to given waypoints in the main quest, so that a surprisingly linear experience becomes. It’s no secret that Experiment 101 was inspired by Breath of the Wild. What makes Zelda so effective, however, is the fact that the game doesn’t take me by the hand.
Strengths and weaknesses
- Small but dense open world
- Focus on decisions
- Original scenario
- Replay value thanks to different endings and New Game +
- Overall too easy
- The easy level of difficulty makes many systems unnecessary
- Very linear gameplay, hardly any reason to explore the world on your own
Biomutant is expected to be released on May 25, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, official versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consequences.
