Big update for Google Home app: climate control and multiple cameras

The Google Home app has received a major update this week, which allows you to stream more cameras and gives you more climate control options, among other things.

Climate control

Now that summer is coming again, you might put a fan next to your bed against mosquitoes, or an air conditioner in your study to keep yourself cool. These climate control products can in many cases be controlled from the Google Home app. Now that has improved considerably.

The climate control tab (which you only see if you have linked devices from that category) now shows more different types of devices, such as fans. At first this was just a thermostat, like the Google Nest Thermostat. We now also see heaters, fans, air conditioners and equipment with which you can influence the humidity. This also includes smart plugs, which have assigned climate control devices as a category.

In the example above you can see what that looks like in the Netherlands with a ventilator. In addition, there is also a new customizable favorites page where you can control the control of your devices, but also view camera feeds. You choose what is shown where.

Many different camera brands are already supported by Google Home, of which you can only see a small preview of the Nest cameras that appeared after 2021. Cameras from Arlo, D-Link, and Lorex also had more camera streaming capabilities. Since this month, more cameras are supported.

Reolink is an example of it, but also TP-Link Kasa cameras. You’ll see them in the live feed, although not all of them actually give a live stream of what’s happening. You can, however, use them for voice control.

So many changes in the Google Home app, which still serves as a kind of smart home hub for the various devices in your home. Something that will become even more interesting when we see more smart home gadgets that work with the Matter smart home standard.

Do you already have devices under climate control? If you see any other device types, let us know in the comments.
