beta Xcode confirms always-on screen iPhone 14 Pro

We have already found several proofs in iOS 16 for an iPhone 14 with an always-on screen. Now there’s even more evidence: A beta of software developer code Xcode confirms an always-on display for a future iPhone.

iOS 16 is full of hints to always-on display

Last week we found out that Apple has released 16 new wallpapers in iOS that are perfect for an always-on screen. That screen is going to be one of the most important new features of the iPhone 14 Pro, it is expected. Today we can add another proof to that list.

The latest beta of Xcode 14 also tells us that an always-on display is coming to the new iPhone. Read all about this handy screen in this article.

Xcode confirms always-on in iPhone 14

An app builder called rhogelleim, reported on Twitter that the SwiftUI preview (part of Xcode) also shows signs of life when it turns off the display. SwiftUI preview allows software developers to test their projects on the Mac.

He mentions that if he turns off the screen through this preview, all functions will still be there and will take on a grayer hue. This goes for the widgets and the clock on the lock screen. This feature in Xcode is suspiciously similar to an always-on display for the new iPhone.

iPhone always on

Why is everyone so excited about always-on?

The discovery in Xcode is yet another hint to a new iPhone with an always-on display. Earlier we also noted that there were many references in the beta of iOS 16 itself. Always-on allows your iPhone to display certain information on the screen, without consuming much battery.

We’ve seen this technique in the Apple Watch models since the Series 5. Although the screen brightness is reduced and some visual elements are hidden to save battery, we can still read the watch face. Handy isn’t it?

Although other smartphone manufacturers have been installing an always-on display in their flagships for years, Apple is only now succeeding. To make this technology possible, the screen needs an upgrade. Apple does this through the ProMotion screen. This is a technique that can initially refresh the screen very quickly.

The improvement over the previous version of the ProMotion display? This new version can also refresh very slowly: 1 Hz. This is ‘only’ one image per second. Due to this low speed, the iPhone’s screen can always remain on, while hardly any battery is lost.
