Best smartphone of 2022: Editor’s Choice
At Androidworld, we close the year 2022 in style with the nice articles that we bring every year in December, but also with interesting annual overviews. We have one left for you and that is the Editor’s Choice of 2022, or the editor’s choice. We did not look at the best price-quality ratio, but at the smartphone that Sebastien, Laura, Jelle and Claudia would buy if money was no object or find the smartphone of the year. Here you will find our favorites of 2022!

Editor Jelle: Nothing Phone (1)
The Nothing Phone (1) is in my opinion the smartphone of the year. As my daily driver I have been using the device for about half a year now and my experiences have only gotten better after the review. And yes, I was critical of the phone at first glance. This was mainly due to the fact that Nothing paid (too) much attention to the design and the ‘functional’ lighting on the back. This while this is no more than a gimmick. You can read more about this in my review of the device.
However, if you judge the device as a smartphone in itself, you can say that the Phone (1) is a striking and very special smartphone. In fact, people even talk to you about it and fellow Phone (1) users sometimes know where to find each other ‘in the wild’. Because of all this, I think the Phone (1) is in any case the most striking and perhaps the nicest smartphone of 2022. In addition, the device has a luxurious design, excellent cameras, a very good battery life and a nice clean Android experience. All this ensures that the Phone (1) offers a very good overall picture that does not drop any major stitches and gives a high-end feeling for about 400 euros.

The Phone (1) is a midrange smartphone with fairly strong specifications and a striking design. The device runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G + chipset and is supported by 8 or 12 GB of RAM.

Editor Sebastien: ASUS Zenfone 9
At the end of the year, I proclaimed myself the ardent defender of the ASUS Zenfone 9. Where a company like Sony cannot convince despite its creative ideas for hardware and software, the ultra-compact Zenfone 9 has succeeded. It is so much more than a small flagship. This ASUS has a fantastic camera with an innovative gimbal stabilization, the speakers are great and there are also smart functions intertwined in the software. And when was the last time you were able to use your phone for two days without charging in between? This is the darkhorse from 2022.

The ASUS Zenfone 9 is one of the biggest reveals of the year 2022. ASUS shows with this phone that they can not only compete with the big guys in the industry, but also that they can make damn good phones in a quirky way. What you miss with other brands, you will find with the Zenfone 9.

Editor Laura: Google Pixel 7 Pro
It’s actually really cool with a Turtle case, because the Google Pixel 7 Pro looks a bit like the belt around Santa’s cozy belly with its camera stripe. That said, this is a must-have device. I’m very impressed with the photography capabilities of this smartphone and while those rounded screen edges may not be practical, I do like the Material You design with all its rounded shapes. Especially the function to restore old photos to their splendor, that offers added value for many people, especially people who have had to say goodbye to others. I think that’s a very nice function that you can make a lot of people very happy with. As far as I’m concerned, more important than, for example, how fast the fingerprint scanner works.
Editor Claudia: Samsung Galaxy Fold 4
If money was no object, I would buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 right now. For me, it is the multitasking monster I would like to spend the day with. Quickly use all kinds of apps and screens at the same time and watch YouTube videos in Flex mode. Of course, showing off a little in public by opening and closing the phone can’t hurt either. I would also go for one of the exclusive colors, Burgundy or beige, but I can’t choose.
