Belgium wants to have an app in 2023 with access to ID card and driving license
A new step in digitization. Belgium plans to release an app in 2023 that will give you direct access to some documents. These possibilities are not limited to the identity card and driver’s license, but even more personal documentation.
Driver’s license and ID card app
The Belgian Secretary of State for Digitization, Mathieu Michel, indicates that every resident of Belgium should have access to a digital wallet by 2023. Work is currently underway on an app that will provide access to the platform, which is now called Smart Nation. Not only is there access to the documentation, but there is also an e-box with communication with the government. Documents can also be requested from the government of Belgium via the e-counter.
Thanks to the Smart Nation platform, Belgians have access to all documents. This concerns, for example, the identity card, the driving license and the digital signature; but also the marriage certificate and any visa. The costs of realizing this app would amount to 50 million euros. It is still being looked into whether a website will also be made available to make the functions of the app available. The European Union wants countries to offer digital alternatives to documents such as the plastic ID card or paper documents.
