Behind these beautiful photos lies an important message

In her exhibition ‘I didn’t want to be a mum’ Sophie shows herself and the relationship between a mother and her child at her most vulnerable. The photos are honest and raw, and at the same time a declaration of love to son Jules, with whom she only really felt a connection after five years, after the arrival of her daughter.

Weak and vulnerable

‘My body had been my body all these years. To see how it changed beyond my control was terrifying, ”says Sophie. When my son was placed on my chest in the hospital, I didn’t feel the instinct to hold him. For months after that, I felt weak and at my most vulnerable. I was the opposite of the brave, independent woman I was before giving birth. ‘ It wasn’t until five years later when her daughter was born that Sophie saw what she had remembered her son all along.

In the exhibition ‘I didn’t want to be a mum’ Sophie shows the beautiful and penetrating images from that time. We can already show you a selection of the images here. The complete exhibition can be viewed until May 30 in the Republic Store in Amsterdam.
