Back with a vengeance: screensavers in Android 13

We used to use screensavers a lot, but have disappeared due to better screens. It looks like they will be back in Android 13.

Screensavers used to be there to make sure your pixels don’t burn into your screen. Nowadays that is no longer necessary, and that is also the case with smartphones. Yet for years we have had the option of using a screensaver with Android phones.

Screensaver Android 13

Check it out if you have an Android phone. In the settings you can find three types; a clock, a Google Photos slideshow, or a gradient animation. Android plans to make these more interesting so that more people start using them.

The Esper website recently found out about this. The ‘new’ feature is in a second developers preview of Android 13. It seems that Google wants to show information on top of the current screensavers. This includes weather information, time and date. This information will then be shown on your screen. Of course you can also disable it and before you activate it you can preview it.

Useful

The question is whether we are waiting for this. Apparently we don’t miss it. However, Google thinks differently because we already saw this with a new interface for the PC. That makes more sense, because screensavers are used more on PCs. Experts wonder why Google does this with Android, because they already have Chrome OS.

Still, it can be helpful. There have been rumors for some time that Google is working on a function that allows you to connect a phone to a monitor. Then you can use your phone as a PC. How this works in practice is not yet known.
