Baby on the way in 2022? Check these things in your health insurance

This way, the coverage fits well with the arrival of your baby.

1. Only switch at the end of the year

You can switch to a different health insurance policy between 12 November and 31 December each year. This also applies if you are pregnant. You then have plenty of time to choose a suitable insurance policy. It is wise to compare which health insurance policy best suits your new family situation.

2. What will you be reimbursed?

Healthcare in the Netherlands is well organized. The basic insurance reimburses you a lot for your pregnancy and childbirth. Think of maternity care, help from midwives, necessary ultrasounds, a home birth or physiotherapy for pregnancy incontinence. Keep in mind that a personal contribution may apply. This is the case, for example, with maternity care and childbirth in hospital without a medical indication. You can take out additional insurance for these costs.

3. What is the benefit of supplementary insurance?

Do you opt for supplementary insurance? Then you can receive reimbursement for pregnancy courses. This is useful in preparing for childbirth. There are also courses that come in handy after childbirth, such as first aid for children. Some insurers even reimburse a baby massage course. Worth checking.

4. Look at the deductible

Do you normally not need that much care? Then you may have increased your deductible. Most healthcare related to your pregnancy is exempt from the deductible. Tip: do not forget to add your newborn baby to your health insurance. Children up to the age of 18 are co-insured for free, but not automatically. You can do this up to four months after birth.
