Despite high energy prices, many people do not want to do without the Christmas lights. To ensure that the sea of ​​lights does not end in a fire, the TÜV has now revealed simple rules that must be observed.

Every year again: In the Advent season and at the turn of the year, fires in German households increase sharply. If you don’t pay attention for a moment – the Advent candle is already on the tablecloth and minutes later the whole apartment is on fire. With a few precautionary measures and rules, however, the risk of fire can be reduced, according to the TÜV association in a current statement (source: TÜV association).

Beware of old fairy lights

Older 220 to 240 volt fairy lights are particularly dangerous. New lamps should have VDE and GS marks

When buying new lamps, you should make sure that they comply with the European standard EN 60598. A look at the cables is also recommended. Insufficiently insulated cables and poorly secured connections represent a mortal danger. “If the cables can simply be detached from the socket, there is a risk of electric shock. With a voltage of over 200 volts, this is life-threatening,” warns the expert. Electrical devices should VDE test mark wear and ideally also that GS mark for tested safety.

LED light chains: The transformer can get hot

LED fairy lights are safer than their classic counterparts. But there are a few pitfalls here too: the LED lights don’t get warm, but the can transformer get hot. To protect against a fire hazard, users should keep it away from carpets, furniture and curtains. Sufficient air circulation must also be ensured. And the same applies here: If you are not at home, it is better to switch off the LED light chain to give the transformer an opportunity to cool down.

Do not overload multiple sockets
