Apple mixed-reality headset runs on xrOS
Several rumors indicate that Apple is working on a mixed reality headset and AR glasses. According to Bloomberg, Apple has now given a name to the operating system of the mixed-reality headset: xrOS.
According to reliable Apple expert Mark Gurman, the xr in xrOS stands for ‘extended reality’. And this new name gives exactly what Apple expects from the product: an extension of reality. According to previous rumors, the name of the operating system was “realityOS”, which was apparent from several references in the source code.
Apple is expected to introduce these mixed-reality glasses with xrOS sometime in the first half of 2023. After that, the field is clear for augmented reality glasses and maybe even AR contact lenses when the technology is ready.
Apple has assigned several people from other departments to the project. According to Gurman, people from Pages, Keynote, Numbers, Notes and Apple News are working on the headset.
Name is not yet certain
Gurman does say that the final name of the operating system can still change. For example, it is quite possible that the xrOS name for the mixed-reality headset is only used internally at Apple. So it remains to be seen what the final name will be when the release comes closer.
Hardware and price mixed reality headset
Kuo previously said that the AR/VR headset will cost more than $2,000. He even went further and said he already has a cheaper version ready. This headset should appear sometime in early 2025.
Furthermore, according to all rumors, the headset has a computing power that is comparable to that of the M1 processor of the MacBook Air. Switching between VR and AR should therefore be seamless.
