Apple’s business model isn’t good, says Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg continues to attack Apple and is now attacking its economic model, after criticizing Apple’s vision of the metaverse and augmented/virtual reality in general. According to the boss of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, the manufacturer of Apple does not have a good approach.
Apple and Meta do not have the same vision
During an intervention in a podcast, Mark Zuckerberg said it’s natural for hardware companies to want to make a profit from product sales. But according to him, Apple is trying to make customers pay as much as possible. Conversely, the head of Meta believes that his group will follow a different path with its various hardware products, and said that his company may not make a profit on some of its sales. Instead, it would rely on revenue generated from software and services offered in the metaverse.
Here is what Mark Zuckerberg said:
I think the business model will be unsettling, in that people usually create hardware and try to make a profit from it, whereas if you’re Apple, you create hardware and charge the highest possible price for it. I think the fact that someone comes into this business and says, “We’re going to make the best hardware in the business and we’re going to sell it at a breakeven point, and in some cases maybe even a little at a loss , in order to contribute to the growth of the ecosystem with the business model of generating revenue through software and services”.
This business strategy is, I think, in line with the mission of connecting people and having people there, because if you want to create a social experience, you have to have people there.
This statement comes the same week that Meta introduced the Quest Pro, its new augmented and virtual reality headset at €1,800. Apple is rumored to be preparing a similar headset which should be presented in early 2023.
