Apple won’t shrink ‘bezels’, but make them useful

Apple doesn’t want to make the edges around the screen, the ‘bezels’ if you will, even smaller. They will try to make them a little more useful.

Remember the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S8? It was pretty revolutionary to have a phone with that much screen-to-body ratio (amount of screen per phone size). However, by current standards, the Galaxy S8 was not such a winner in terms of STB ratio. What followed was the hunt for a screen that filled the entire phone, with bezels as thin as possible. The edges of a screen that do not completely fill the phone. Brands opted for folding cameras, hole-punch cameras and, there is still a lot of talk about it: the notch, which Apple still uses. Also on their Macbooks, by the way.

Apple and screens

Because people are often not really happy with Apple and their screen filling. The edges on both iPhones and Macbooks are still quite thick and then there is a ‘notch’ (a small extra thick notch in the screen at the top) where a camera and some sensors are located. The bezels on recent Macbooks and the recent iPhone are now fairly small, but smaller is always possible. Will that happen?

Useful Bezels

We don’t know, but if it’s a recent patent application, there should be some room left. Apple wants to process a kind of touch keys in the bezels. In everything that is not screen on their devices small parts are added that can be ‘useful’. This way the piece of useless border around the screen may still be useful.

The patent shows a laptop, a smartwatch and even a pen, with which we can conclude that this technology is on the table for the Macbook, Apple Watch and Apple Pencil. How and what we have to wait and see. (via USPTO).
