Google announces all kinds of new products

Google announced a variety of new products at its annual I/O event. It concerns new smartphones, a smart watch and a tablet – all products that Apple also sells. This means that the Cupertino manufacturer will soon have a number of strong competitors.

Google has been releasing its own smartphones for a while now. The current top models are the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. These smartphones are not officially available in the Netherlands, but are available via the gray import. Google will soon also come with a smartwatch and a tablet. So the manufacturer is slowly building its own Apple-like ecosystem. We have listed the announcements of Google I/O 2022 for you.

1. Pixel 6a takes on iPhone SE

We start with the Google Pixel 6a, a cheaper version of the regular Pixel 6. The device has a 6.1-inch screen with – just like the iPhone SE 2022 – a 60Hz refresh rate. The devices are similar in many ways. They both run on the fastest processors of both manufacturers. The iPhone SE has Apple’s A15 chip and the Pixel 6a has the acclaimed Google Tensor.

The Pixel 6a is of course less powerful than the regular Pixel 6 in a number of areas. For example, the camera has an older sensor, which we saw on older Pixel phones. This is also similar to Apple’s approach – the iPhone SE 2022 has the same sensor as the iPhone SE 2020 and the iPhone 8.

The Pixel 6a is not officially coming to the Netherlands, but it is expected to be for sale via gray import on websites such as Belsimpel. In Germany, the device with 128GB storage costs 459 euros† That is 70 euros cheaper than an iPhone SE with 64GB storage, which is 529 euros goes over the counter.

2. Pixel Watch: First Google Watch Ever

The time has come: a Google Pixel Watch is coming. After months – or even years – of rumours, a smart watch is finally making an appearance. With this, Google will compete with the Apple Watch Series 7, the best-selling smartwatch of the moment. There is a reason, because the Apple watch simply works very well.

The Pixel Watch has a different look than the square Apple Watch with its round, bubble-like design. This allows Google to win over a number of Apple users, because many people find round watches more beautiful than square ones. It’s a matter of taste, but also on the editors of iPhoned we really like the Pixel Watch design.

We don’t know much about the Pixel Watch yet, because Google only lifted a corner of the veil. We do know that the watch runs on a new version of Google’s Wear OS. It’s made of shiny stainless steel and packed with all kinds of powerful health features.

3. New top devices: the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro

We didn’t see it coming, but Google already gave us a preview of the brand new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The devices will only really be announced in the fall, but the design has already been announced. The smartphones look like sophisticated versions of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. For example, the current black camera bar at the back makes way for a metal bar with black accents.

We also know that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will get a new generation of the Google Tensor chip under the hood. It is not yet known how powerful this chip will be, we will hear more about that in the fall. So just a little patience!

4. Google Pixel Tablet coming in 2023

What we also did not expect was the teaser of a new Pixel Tablet. Google hasn’t released its own tablet for years. The manufacturer shared little to nothing about the new device, except for a few photos. We also know that the tablet will only be on the market in 2023. There is a good chance that the device will compete with Apple’s iPad Air or iPad Pro.
