Apple Watch owners can breathe a sigh of relief: iPhone update eliminates errors

The last iPhone update was only a few days old, so Apple has to admit a mistake – especially annoying for Apple Watch owners who have lost an important convenience feature. Now Apple keeps its word and finally provides a remedy with the update to iOS 14.7.1.

Update from July 27th 2021: That Software update promised by Apple has now been released and the bug related to unlocking the Apple Watch has been eliminated. Apple briefly on this in the “package insert”:

“IOS 14.7.1 Addresses an issue where iPhone models with Touch ID cannot unlock a paired Apple Watch using the Unlock with iPhone function. “

Owners of an Apple Watch who have been waiting to install iOS 14.7 can now update without hesitation.

But the update is also recommended to all other users because it also contains important security updates. The elimination of a certain weak point is highlighted, which may already have been actively exploited (source: Apple). Noteworthy: It was also published iPadOS 14.7.1, which also closes corresponding security gaps.

Original article:

Apple Watch users are familiar with a handy feature known as “Unlock with iPhone”. Anyone who puts on the Apple Smartwatch does not have to unlock it “manually” with a passcode; the job is simply taken over by an iPhone, which is then unlocked for it. After all, both devices are connected, the iPhone is sufficient as a simple “key” for the Apple Watch.

Unlock Apple Watch with iPhone (TouchID): It no longer works with iOS 14.7

Unfortunately this no longer works after the iPhone has been updated to iOS 14.7. Everyone is particularly affected iPhones with Touch ID, but not those with Face ID (source: Apple). The only current model with the technology is still the iPhone SE in Apple’s portfolio, but many older models with fingerprint sensors such as an iPhone 8 or 7 are likely to be used in many places.

There is still no real solution to the problem. Apple writes succinctly: “If you run into this problem, just enter the passcode directly on your Apple Watch to unlock it. You only need to do this once for as long as you keep your Apple Watch on your wrist. If you’ve forgotten your code, you’ll have to reset your Apple Watch. ”A major setback in terms of comfort, I have to say.

We’ll have to wait even longer for iOS 15 until autumn. In the video see a highlight of the new iPhone system:

Apple plans to publish another update soon

But users don’t have to be satisfied with it forever, in the same document Apple promises to fix the bug with a future software update. Ergo: iOS 14.7.1 shouldn’t be long in coming. Until then, however, the following applies: Owners of an Apple Watch and an iPhone with Touch should rather refrain from the update until the error has been corrected. However, if this warning comes too late, there is at least the hope of a bug fix in the next few days.
