“Apple wanted to make iPhone 14 Pro even more powerful”

Apple planned to make the iPhone 14 Pro even more powerful, but encountered problems with the graphics processor. That claims a well-known tech website. What went wrong?

Read on after the ad.

Should the iPhone 14 Pro have been even more powerful?

Apple is known for its fast smartphone chips. The A16 in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max also performs excellently. Still, the Cupertino company had much bigger plans with this chip. That is what the usually well-informed tech website claims The Information.

Apple engineers wanted to add a new ‘gpu’, or graphics processor, to the A16. Among other things, it should have provided more realism in games. It was not until very late in the development process that problems came to light. The GPU turned out to guzzle a lot of power, so the battery life of the new iPhones was quite disappointing. The smartphones also got too hot.

Apple then decided to completely scrap this GPU and fall back on the copy of the A15. This was only slightly modified. Therefore, the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) is hardly more graphically powerful than the iPhone 13 Pro (Max). Apple was also remarkably quiet about improvements in this area during the presentation of the iPhone 14 Pro.

Is it messy at Apple?

We are not used to this kind of error from Apple. The Information writes that the tech giant is finding it increasingly difficult to improve its chips every year anyway. Many top engineers have left the company in recent years because they want to start their own business. Apple would even warn the remaining staff that this kind of startups are unsuccessful in most cases. In this way, it is hoped that further depopulation will be prevented.
