‘Apple VR headset can be operated with hand gestures’

The VR headset that Apple plans to launch in 2022 can reportedly be controlled with hand gestures. Multiple advanced depth sensors make this possible.

VR headset Apple follows hand gestures

The news comes from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has already given us a lot of info about Apple’s upcoming VR headset. Now he claims that the headset is equipped with multiple 3D sensors, which allows the device to handle hand gestures.

According to Kuo, the depth sensors are not only able to determine the position of a hand or object, but the technique also detects subtle details in the hand movements. Kuo provides an example where the user can open his hand to release a virtual balloon. This should provide a user environment that is much more intuitive and lively than we know with current headsets.

3D sensors

To bring this impressive hand detection to the VR headset, Apple is building in four 3D sensors, according to Kuo. According to him, all four are of better quality than the depth sensor that is present in the current iPhones and iPad Pro.

According to Kuo, the 3D sensors include a larger field of view, so it can detect objects up to 200 percent further away than current Face ID sensors. In addition to hand gesture detection, the headset will reportedly have eye tracking, iris recognition, voice control, skin detection, facial expression detection and spatial detection.

Hand tracking with VR headsets is not new. The Oculus Quest can also be operated with the gestures. There you control the mouse pointer by pointing; Clicking is done by making a pinching movement with the thumb and forefinger. With the Ocolus Quest, however, the techniques for estimating depth are not very advanced, so we expect more of that with the Apple headset. The device is expected to be released at the end of 2022.
