Apple mixed reality headset postponed

According to previous rumors, Apple would introduce the mixed-reality glasses sometime in the first half of 2023. There seems to have been a hitch there, because reliable Apple connoisseur Ming-Chi Kuo says that the headset will now only come in the second half of 2023.

Kuo is not sure whether the headset will therefore be announced in January, because according to the Apple expert it is not wise to wait too long between an announcement and release. According to de Kuo, WWDC 2023 in June would be the perfect time to introduce the mixed reality headset.

According to Kuo, Apple’s headset is a pretty expensive niche product. He thinks Apple will ship less than 500,000 headsets in 2023.

Hardware and price mixed reality headset

The price of the AR/VR headset is also known, according to Kuo. It will cost about 2000 euros. Kuo went even further, also saying that Apple is planning a cheaper version. This headset should appear sometime in early 2025.

Furthermore, according to all rumors, the headset has a computing power that is comparable to that of the M1 processor of the MacBook Air. Switching between VR and AR should therefore be seamless.

In addition, according to Bloomberg, Apple has now also given a name to the operating system of the mixed-reality headset: xrOS. Reliable Apple expert Mark Gurman says that the ‘xr’ in xrOS stands for ‘extended reality’. According to previous rumors, the name of the operating system was “realityOS”, which was apparent from several references in the source code.
