New wireless charger introduced
A new wireless charging standard has been introduced, largely inspired by Apple’s MagSafe. At the moment, Qi is the dominant charging standard in wireless charging, but it is now getting a successor with Qi2.
MagSafe already used Qi as a charging standard, but Apple added the well-known magnetic ring. With this magnetic ring, the wireless charger, for example, sticks well to your phone. What will the MagSafe with Qi2 look like?
Apple MagSafe inspired Qi2
Apple’s MagSafe was used as a starting point for the development of the new charging standard. The Qi2 standard is also equipped with a magnetic ring. As a result, the wireless charger connects better to the device, an important aspect to pay attention to when wireless charging.
By properly connecting a device – for example your iPhone – to the wireless charger, charging is (much) faster. Less energy is lost with a good connection, so that more energy can be transferred in less time. A good connection is also safer. Apple is on the list of companies that support Qi2, so the successor to Apple MagSafe will also receive Qi2.
What will happen to the old Apple MagSafe?
In principle, the new Qi2 standard has no consequences for Qi. The ‘old’ wireless charger will continue to work, even with a device that supports Qi2. In that case, the old charger simply won’t get the benefits of Qi2, which will mainly be a higher charging speed with iPhones.
Qi2 is expected to transfer more than the maximum of 15 watts with wireless charging. Qi and therefore MagSafe currently have a maximum of 15 watts, but by increasing this amount it is possible to charge your phone faster. If you connect a Qi standard to a Qi2, the old maximum will continue to apply. Your old MagSafe will certainly still be usable.
MagSafe will soon also be available on Android
That Qi2 is now becoming the new charging standard is good news for anyone with a MagSafe. Qi2 is therefore also processed in Android smartphones, so that in the future you can use your MagSafe for more phones than just your iPhone. Are you out for the day and a friend with an Android phone has a dead battery? Then you can help them later with your MagSafe charger!
